With an ever-increasing degree of pollution, due to high quantities of waste thrown in all places and a high level of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere, people are struggling more and more to find a viable solution to this. One alternative would be resorting to solid waste management. Solid waste management refers to collecting, transporting, processing and monitoring the waste materials.
Solid waste management is a distinct practice from resource recovery. Resource recovery focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources, whereas the solid waste management treats all materials as single class, regardless if solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive. Moreover, solid waste management tries to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of each through different methods. Solid waste management also refers to those particular residues that cannot be recycled. One of the disposal methods that solid waste management uses is incineration.
Incineration is a solid waste management disposal method in which solid organic wastes are subject tot combustion. Therefore, they are converted into residues and gaseous waste. Incineration is used as a solid waste management when the disposal of certain hazardous waste materials is needed. Another solid waste management disposal method that has been implemented for years now, is recycling. Recycling is a practice that refers to the collection and reuse of waste materials, such as empty beverage containers. The most common consumer products recycled include aluminium, such as beverage cans, copper such as wire, steel food and aerosol cans.
The main issue in solid waste management is sustainability. Companies and individuals are encouraged to improve their environmental efficiencies each year. On a larger scale, the content of solid waste can be redirected by using them as a direct combustion fuel. Thus, the non-renewable energy sources will be spared for a while, and cities can benefit from a new form of energy. Thermal treatment ranges from using waste as a fuel source for cooking or heating and the use of gas fuel to fuel for boilers, in order to generate heat and electricity.
