I would guess that it is fair to say that you don’t spend much of your time thinking about trash. In fact, the only time that trash probably crosses your mind is when you have to take the trash out of your house and put it in a garbage can. However, just because trash isn’t something that is on your mind very often, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t important. We all produce a lot of trash (and as you know, those of us who live in the United States produce a huge amount of trash), and it’s important for this trash to be taken care of properly. If trash was not handled properly, it would not only become a nuisance, but it would also lead to more severe problems, such as the spread of disease among crowded areas (if you don’t believe me, just look back in history at the major plagues and you will see that a lack of proper waste disposal played a major role in these issues).

Fortunately, the reason that you don’t have to spend your time thinking about trash is because we have such an advanced solid waste management system. Thanks to all of the hard work of the people who make our solid waste management system run, we simply have to get our trash out to the curb, and then the rest is done for us without us ever needing to think about where our trash is going. So, the next time you see a solid waste management truck drive by, be sure to give the men and women who are making your life easier a friendly wave!
